Sometimes you stop in place just because it's on the way to where your going. Iceland just happened to be on the way, so I stopped. Just like my ancestors did a 1,000 years ago. The first person to settle in Iceland was a Norwegian named Floki Vilgerdarson in 865. He also named it. OK then you think who named Greenland? and you know why. Another Norwegian named Greenland, he is Erik the Red. He was a hot headed guy that first got kick out of Norway, moved to Iceland where he also got kicked out. Continued west and discovered Greenland. He wanted to populate Greenland so he named it and went back to Iceland and told of this place he discovered which he called Greenland. He had great power of persuasion and in 985 sailed back to Greenland with 500 men and woman, domestic animals and created a new existence in his new country.
My time in Island was short but I will never forget the landscape and the wonderful Icelandic people.
